Job Readiness - Members Prepare for One Year at One Job

One of the greatest barriers to economic self-sufficiency is job-hopping. Changing jobs frequently means always starting over and never establishing a long-term work record that can lead to advancement and increased income. We provide the support and services our Members need to achieve that first, important step to becoming economically self-sufficient – One Year at One Job.

Job Readiness Workshop

To help our Members prepare for full-time employment and to understand employer expectations, each Member agrees to attend a five-day Job Readiness Workshop. The workshop – offered every other week – meets at Miami Valley Works Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  We hold a wrap-up session the Monday following the workshop week. Applicants must have completed an application and attended a two-hour orientation prior to beginning the workshop.

Topics included in the workshop are: applications, references, making commitments, attitude, building confidence, employer expectations, problem solving, removing obstacles, conflict resolution, values, and health & wellness.

The Employment Coaches help Members identify their strengths and assess their skills & qualifications for the positions they desire.

Interview Preparation

Preparation is the key to successful interviewing. Each week, Employer and Community Volunteers conduct practice interviews with our Members. Volunteers include executives and professionals from Montgomery County, Wright State University, Ronald McDonald House, Greater Dayton RTA and others.

Lifetime Membership

Members who complete the workshop become Members of Miami Valley Works – receiving on-going support to help handle the stress of managing work and life so that they can stay on track and break the cycle of poverty by becoming economically self-sufficient.
